Whirlwind

 Since I got back into town it feel like I have been playing catch up and trying to adjust back into my normal routine. For some reason this process seems to be taking me a little longer than usual. I've already been back at work for a week & it finally dawned on me that it's already the end of the month.

 July has been a huge whirlwind and I can't believe it's nearly over. How and when did that happen?

 I suppose it's just because I've had a lot more going on this month than usual, but it was the good sort of busy. Aside from getting to go an a truly memorable and amazing trip, I worked a lot and did my best to really enjoy this month.

 I also lightened my hair and quit plucking my eyebrows. At home we've been addicted to spinach and artichoke dip & our new favorite show Halt and Catch Fire. 

July has been a pretty good month.

Summertime Adventures

 I'm still not sure if it's officially summer yet or not, but school is out and the temperatures in Texas are summer ready. I have always loved summer but this summer I am even more anxious because my husband and I have made a goal to get the most out of this summer that we can. We kicked things off last month with our first coast trip of this summer. This month we have been doing our best to enjoy time outside in Austin. These photos were snapped at The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on a recent visit (I'll be sharing a TON of pictures from the center soon because it was so beautiful!).

It felt really great to get some fresh air and enjoy a really beautiful day. The wildflower center was an ideal place to take outfit photos as well with all of the beautiful scenery, but because of the time of day it was so so bright. Lucky for me there are also a lot of shady trees perfect for snapping pictures under. Plus, because I left without outfit photos in front of wildflowers I have an excuse to go back soon ;)

Spring Equinox

 It's finally here! After weeks of counting down till spring, and going on and on about the weather and what not, spring has finally arrived. It's official and I couldn't be more pleased. Springtime is actually a somewhat short season in central Texas because the temperatures start to get pretty high beginning in late April. I don't mind the warm temperatures that are sure to come because I'm used to our summers having temperatures in the triple digits, but I plan on making the most of the beautiful weather springtime has to offer while it's around.

We have even started to assemble our patio garden again which is one of our most favorite spring pastimes. This year we have decided to focus on a herb garden and then just have mostly succulents and cacti as we have had little success with trying to grow vegetables in containers. We did get just one little cucumber plant to give it one last go.

Lighter Layers

For 2014 I wanted to make it a point to take more outfit photos outdoors and try to add some variety to the locations but until now the weather hasn't really cooperated. These are taken just outside our apartment, and as you can tell it still isn't quite spring but when my husband suggested taking a few pictures outside I figured the change of scenery couldn't hurt especially since it was finally warm enough.

 Things around here have been moving really quickly, and my husband has been even more busy with work and school than usual, making the days sort of blur together. We welcomed day light savings time because it means longer days and maybe just a little more time to catch our breath before the next day begins.

 I think it's actually spring break for most schools around here so I think that's another reason why I've set my sights on spring time. This teal floral dress always makes me think of spring so I decided to wear it, layered with this lacey peplum top, both from JCP. I also had to wear some sandals, these are a super old pair from payless that I really need to replace. 

The hat of course is from Target and the belt is thrifted. 

 I've always thought of myself as more of a fall person but this year I am super excited for spring time. I have so many dresses I can't wait to wear without tights too. For once spring has me inspired, and so of course it is taking it's time getting here.

 Are you more a fan of spring or fall? They seem to always be rather polarizing seasons. I still can't decided but I do know that I like winter least.

Bed Head

I am definitely someone who is constantly fighting the battle of bedhead. It's been an on going thing since I was a kid. The truth of the matter is that there are some people out there who have perfect hair. Their hair color is pretty so they don't have to dye it, it never tangles, and when they wake up in the morning each strand is perfectly in place. I am not one of those people. 

 I can recall the first time I realized that I was not blessed with pretty hair. I was in fifth grade and I had developed quite the knot in my hair, behind my head. I had pretty long hair when I was this age, making it a bit easier to hide my horrible knot from my mother. At some point she had discovered it, and I had to spend what seemed like hours, sitting in a chair while my mom yanked a comb through my tangled mess of hair. It had dawned on me that none of my friend's with longer hair had to deal with the tangled mess that I did, and within a few months I just gave up and chopped my long locks off into a chin length bob.

 It was in those pre-teen/teenage years that I discovered the joys of hair dye. At first the love affair began with those big chunky highlights everyone sported in the 90's. I was so in love with my color, and from that moment on I was hooked on hair dye. I spent the majority of my high school years going back and forth between having blonde hair, black hair, brown hair, and red hair. 

Needless to say, all that dyeing ended up taking it's toll on my already uncooperative hair.

 As I became an adult I became more and more concerned with the health of my hair and stopped dying it as often, thinning it out, and attempted to stop using my straightener as often too. I did my best to stop further damage from occurring by swearing off bleaching my hair and blow drying it too often too. The funny thing is that throughout these years I had always held the belief that my hair was this coarse and unmanageable because what I had put it through, but I still suffer from bedhead, nearly every day. Some of us are just born this way ;)

So as an adult I've done my best to embrace messy hair. I still dye it from time to time, but I've finally come to terms with the 'texture' of my hair. So on days like today, when I get out of bed with unruly curls, I just go with it. I run a brush through my bangs and tame what frizz I can, throw on a (faux) leather jacket, and proudly rock my bedhead.

Take it from me, if you have been fighting with you hair, it's time to throw in the towel (or dye, or blow dryer, or straightener), and just embrace what you have, you'll be happy you did!

So This Is The New Year

 So the truth is these pictures were actually taken on New Year's Eve so technically this isn't my first outfit of 2014, but it still kind of is ;)

 This dress was a christmas present from my In-Laws and it is a new favorite for sure. You all know how much I love all things black and white so this fit nicely into my closet. I also couldn't resist the urge to pair it up with my two favorite colors: Teal and Orange.

The scarf was a gift from my Grandma a few years ago, the orange cardigan is from Target, and the boots are from JCP.

Predictable

 Seems like its been awhile since I've shared an outfit post around here. Truth be told Thanksgiving threw off my schedule. I went out of town and feel like I'm still not back in a groove. I guess it's pretty easy to have a case of the blah's this time of year.

 I do really love the holiday season but I am definitely a creature of habit and going outside my routine is just exhausting for me. I know that sounds sad, but I'm really exhausted from all the excitement. In my defense I did have a birthday right before Thanksgiving so... yeah, that's my excuse ;)

 When life get's really busy I have a hard time being creative with my outfits. I find myself just being drawn to combinations I know work. Case in point: 1 and 2. 

I love wearing turquoise + orange.

 I've discussed my love for this color combination before, but it's something I didn't notice until I began sharing my outfits with you all here. I started seeing both these colors appearing over and over, sometimes together, sometimes not. It's just sort of funny because I never used to like the color orange but obviously it's become one of my favorite colors to wear year round. I'm sure it's because these two hues are opposite on the color wheel making them a good contrast to one another. I just find that pairing these two colors together in an outfit is just easy for me.

 I have shared an outfit with my crocheted dress  before during the summer months, but I was itching to style it again in a more winter friendly way. It paired really well with my orange coat ( both the dress and coat are from JcPenney last year). I added my trusty opaque black tights from target for a little extra warmth and then finished the outfit off with my brown specs and brown loafers both of which are thrifted.

Sometimes being predictable can be a good thing.

Blue Floral

This is one of my favorite dresses. I love the color and the abstract floral print, plus it has pockets. The pockets are ultimately what sold me. Also I like that this dress is a little bit structured and it has some weight to it. It is from JcPenney.

I paired it up with some neutral accessories to help transition this dress into fall. This is my favorite cardigan currently, it was purchased from target. The belt is from another dress and the shoes were handed down to me from my sister, but originally they're from old navy.

This necklace is another favorite. It has gotten a lot of wear here on the blog for that reason. It goes with everything pretty much and gives my outfits just a little more edge an interest. Plus my grandma gave it to me, so of course I have to love it :)
